The Merle Watson Garden of the Senses, built to honor the tragically-short life of the gifted acoustic guitarist Eddy Merle Watson, is a thing of beauty for the sighted and visually-impaired alike. In addition to a collection of plants chosen for their strong scents or unusual textures, the centerpiece of the garden is a 150-foot long brick wall featuring a series of elaborate brick sculptures representing every letter in the English alphabet. This display, called "Nature's Alphabet," contains a "pocket" outline around each image allowing the visually impaired to trace around the letter representations. The Merle Watson Garden of the Senses is one part of a large garden complex located on the campus of Wilkes Community College in Wilkesboro.
